Are these UDC members the white supremacists who put up all those racist monuments BLM has warned us about? How about those Confederate veterans above them? Some mighty desperate and despicable folks if you ask me.

As We Enter the Fifth Year of the Renewed Attack on All Things Confederate

We can definitely put the date of the beginning of this effort in earnest at June 17, 2015, it had been going on with increasing incidence ever since the Civil War Sesquicentennial, where it began picking up impetus.

That date, a white supremacist, racist, whose name won't be mentioned by me, entered that church and killed those blacks who welcomed him into study the Bible.  He has done the most to hurt the Confederacy than anyone ever did, other than John Wilkes Booth.  Why he is still alive is beyond me.

The second worst thing was the confrontation in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.  This is where we also first majorly encountered the radical left.  When I saw video of what happened, I have to say that there were plenty of really bad people on both sides.  The sorry excuse who crashed his car into the anti-protesters is also, for some reason, is still alive.

I started this blog because newspapers usually don't report everything that continues to happen, which might give some the idea that this is over.  Believe me, it isn't.  And, personally, I don't believe it will be over until the last Confederate statue and memorial is pulled down or removed.

What I report are headlines from various newspapers and media sources and with some I make comment.

I am calling this the Second Civil War or Civil War II.

December 28, 2019

**  A new bill would end Virginia's observance of a holiday celebrating Confederate generals.

**  UNC Black Panthers send letter to Board of Governors opposing Silent Sam settlement.  They are the first Blacks to attend UNC between 1952 and 1972.  So surprised they would be against the settlement. At least we know they ad no involvement in the tearing down of the monument.

**  In 2019, gun violence persisted, the Confederate statue came down. the Dixie Classic Fair got a new name...  (Winston-Salem, N.C..  And, you will never guess why the fair name was changed.  Too bad they took the statue down.  I had wanted to visit the Chicago White Sox minor league baseball team there, but now the city is on my list of no-visit/boycott because of this.

Of Wiley's Racist Monument, Bands and Roses With Offensive Names, and Pesky Confederate Flags

December 25, 2019

Well, if Confederate monuments are racist, I guess Mr. Wiley's monument is of the same sort.

And Now This, About Those Andrew Jackson Statues

From the December 16, 2019, Kansas City (Mo.) Star  "Frank White says minority groups should have had a say about Andrew Jackson statues"  by Mike Hendricks.

Over the objections of Jackson County Chief Executive Frank White, the county legislative assembly voted Monday to affix historical context plaques to statues of Andrew Jackson  outside the Kansas City courthouse and the Historic Truman Courthouse in Independence.

He would like some input on those plaques from Blacks and Indians on what the plaques say about his being a slaveholder and what he did to the Indians as both a military leader and president.

Well, at least they aren't being taken down (yet) and as of yet haven't been the victims of hate crimes from you-know-who.

And, in case you are wondering, Mr. White is a black man.

But at least the drive here is for context, not destruction and removal.

Things to Know About Pearl Harbor

Well, more than five.

From the December 7, 2019, Kankakee (Illinois) Daily Journal "Five things to know about Pearl harbor."

**  The attack destroyed or damaged  about 20 Navy ships and more than 300 planes.

**  Drydocks and airfields were likewise destroyed.

**  2,403 sailors and soldiers and civilians were killed.

**  Nearly all the battleships at Pearl Harbor were significantly damaged:  Maryland, West Virginia, California, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Tennessee were either sunk of badly damaged.  All, however, were raised and repaired and fought.  The USS Arizona and Oklahoma were both sunk and never fought again.

**  Despite this, the U.S. Pacific Fleet was not knocked out of the war..

**  The Japanese failed to destroy the most important onshore facilities:  oil storage depots,  repair shops, shipyards and submarine yards.  As a result, the U.S. was able to rebound rather quickly.

**  Unexpected American reaction.  The attack united the country with a desire to go to war,

**  When FDR asked for a declaration of war the next day,  Congress was just one vote shy of unanimous, with Rep. Jeannette Rankin of Montana voting against it (she had also voted against the WW I declaration).  She said, "As a woman I can't go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else."

About Those Christmas Parades in North Carolina

In the past several days, one parade was canceled and one received the go-light.  Both North Carolina towns are near Raleigh, the state capital.

Garner canceled theirs, but Wake Forest will still have their annual parade.

The Wake Forest parade (Wake Forest Univ. was originally located here before it moved to Winston-Salem) has included the Sons of Confederate Veterans for decades.  The parade will go on as planned.

The City of Garner, however, canceled their parade, which has had Confederate re-enactment groups for many years,  But fears that their appearance might cause "those people" who hate all things Confederate to cause problems and disrupt it with confrontations caused the city council to cancel it this year.

It is too bad when a group can disrupt an annual, peaceful event simply through threat as "those people" do now.

Kudus to Wake Forest for standing up to "those people."  Disruptions and confrontations will not be coming from Confederate re-enactors.

Did Bubba Watson Remove the General Lee's Confederate Flag?-- Part 2

You've just got to love the name Bubba in this article.  Seems fitting, right Cooter?

Three years later, during the widespread drive to remove all things Confederate, Bubba Watson tweeted:  "All men are created equal, I believe that so will be  be painting the American flag  over the roof of the  General Lee #USA."

The Volo Auto Museum in Lake County, Illinois, out close to me, which owns the only other surviving Georgia General Lee, quickly offered to buy Watson's car, but he never replied.

But, no one has ever seen whether Mr. Watson made good on his promise.  John Schneider doesn''t think he did.

While the current value of the car is not known, classic car experts say that removing the Confederate flag would have a negative impact on the car's value.

Well, then there is the problem with the car's name.

John Schneider Doesn't Think Bubba Watson Took Confederate Flag Off His General Lee-- Part 1

From Oct. 31, 2019, Fox News by Gary Gastelu.

John Schneider played Bo Duke on the TV show "Dukes of Hazzard" and says he doubts that golfer Bubba Watson  lived up to his promise to remove the Confederate flag from the iconic Dodge Charger  "General Lee" that they drove.  Supposedly he was to replace it with a U.S. flag.

Watson bought the fully restored car in 2012 for $121,000.  This is the actual General Lee that was shown jumping over a police car in the show's opening credits.  It was designated as  "Lee 1" by the production team, and later repainted and reused in a different role then sent to a Georgia junkyard where it was rediscovered twenty years later.

Hundreds of stunt cars were used during the show's seven-year run, but Watson's is one of only two known to have survived the  from the Georgia shoots before production was moved to California.

Watson is a long-time fan of the show and drove it often in public but the Confederate flag painted on its roof became an issue when NASCAR canceled a scheduled parade lap by the car before the Phoenix race that year.

Really, NASCAR, the General Lee?

You Just Can't Know About a Guy Named Bubba.  --Old SecLee1

The Second Civil War: The Sugar Land 95

November 18, 2019.

**  150-year-old-precedent faces change in new, blue Virginia.

**  'It's a sham':  Protests erupt  at FBISD's ceremony to honor Sugar Land 95."  Two years ago the bodies of nearly 100 former slaves were found.  The Texas school district plans on reburying them, but there is a protest that they should be tested for DNA to find their relatives.

Fort bend Independent School District is about 30 miles south of Houston.  The land had been given to the district by the Texas prison system.

**  Robert E. Lee wasn't a hero, he was a traitor.

I can certainly see why the people in Texas would want testing done, but the district says they already have enough material for the testing, but out of respect would like to bury the bodies and do the testing later. However, who will pay for the testing is not known.

Although this is not an attack on the Confederacy, the protesters did claim that had the bodies been of Confederate soldiers, the reburial would not be happening.

They're Back: The Second Civil War Continues

A couple weeks ago, I noticed there was just one alert for Confederate in my e-mail.  That was great.  Maybe, these continued attack on all-things Confederate were becoming to an end.

And, then, I went several days with no alerts at all.

I kind of doubted that the attacks had stopped, but couldn't help but hope they had.  It would give me nothing but pleasure to end this blog.  "The war is over, man, Wormer dropped the big one."  I don't have enough time to do my other seven blogs.  One less would be wonderful.

It was either that, or perhaps someone doesn't want me to be writing about all the attacks as many people rarely hear anything about it.

But as long as the Civil War II or Second Civil War continues, I have to continue this blog.

Oh, Well.  I Was Kind Of Hoping This Would Be Over.  --Old Secesh

Are Confederate Veterans Considered to be United States Veterans?

Not according to the anti-Confederate folks  who regard them as being the same as the Nazi guards at the German concentration camps during World War II.  Few in world history have been worse.  They deserved nothing but shame and their memory eliminated because of the stain of slavery.

But, how come Confederates are buried in National Cemeteries?  How come they are issued gravestones by the U.S. government?  Why is it that the widows and children are eligible for federal pensions?

Perhaps, somehow, someway, they are U.S. veterans.  As such, disrespect to any of them is tantamount to disrespect for all U.S. veterans.

Something the Confederate haters should think about before they commit hate crimes (i.e. "vandalize") Confederate statues and memorials.  I guess we should condemn them to be a part of those who showed such disrespect for our veterans returning from the Vietnam War.

It Started in Pittsboro Back in 2017-- Part 2

Randy Voller  said that when the original courthouse burned down in 2010, that he heard from the community that there were those who said they wished the statue had burned down as well, particularly in the black community.  He suggested that a resolution be sent to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners requesting that a more suitable place be found for the statue and replace it with something more unifying.

"I will defend  all citizens' rights to free expression, thought and access to free assembly,: Voller said.  "However when we are considering the iconography and monumentation that appear prominently in our public square representing in some way, shape or form the dreams and aspirations of the community we can and should take the time to reflect whether such monuments represent the community at-large and whether it is time to consider a change."

Monumentation?

It Started in Pittsboro Back in August of 2017-- Part 1

From the August 18, 2017,  Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer  "Rumors bring group to aid of Pittsboro's Confederate monument" by Tammy Grubb.

And this was over two years ago.

Rumors that another Confederate statue might be coming down sparked a group of Chatham County (N.C.) to action Thursday.  Several Pittsboro residents were spotted during rush hour sitting along the base of the Confederate statue in front of the county courthouse.

Sunday, there was a vigil attended by about 30 person in solidarity with the victims of the protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday.

Former Pittsboro mayor Randy Voller has called for conversation on the statue's future.  News coverage of his interview seemed to lead to the rumor that the statue was to be taken down according to Voller.

The monument's future was not the only reason he  spoke to the board, but also the toppling of the Durham Confederate statue as well.

About That Racist Incident at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Naperville, Illinois

There is a whole lot about this story in the Chicagoland media.

Last weekend, a group of Blacks came into the Buffalo Wild Wings in Naperville and were asked to move because a white person there did not want to be seated next to Blacks.  The people at the restaurant had the black folks move.

This is almost unbelievable in this day and age that something like this would happen.  I thought we'd come a long way from when Blacks could not eat in restaurants with Whites.

I am glad the Blacks made a big thing about it as well they should.  The managers and employees at the Wild Wings have been fired and the white customer is no longer allowed to come inside.

Civil War II, Nov. 1: N.C., Georgia and Emmett Till

Alerts for Confederate Nov. 1, 2019.

**  Confederate statue remains in Chatham County.  (Pittsboro, N.C.)

**  As NC reckons with Confederate monuments, marker in Georgia supplies historical context.  As in they were fighting for slavery.  I am very willing to have these context markers put up as long as the statues remain.

**  Why the Emmett Till memorial briefly sat in front of the Confederate monument.  The Emmett Till marker has been repeatedly vandalized, most often with bullets because of its way out in the country location.  This is nothing short of a hate crime and if the offenders are apprehended, they should be charged as such.

I consider desecration to Confederate statues a hate crime as well.  Offenders should be treated as such.

Linwood Controversy: Flagpoles and Flags Removed After Confederate Flag Flew

From Oct. 25, 2019, WRBL CBS TV News by Chuck Williams.

I wrote about this in the last post and followed up on it.

At first I just figured it was just another example of offended people doing something illegal, but after hearing the story behind the headline, I'd have to say the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) camp was out of line in what they did.

Linwood is a historical cemetery in Columbus, Georgia, in which many Confederate veterans are buried.  The city and the SCV camp had reached an agreement where they could fly the First National Flag, but not the Confederate battle flag.  Either as a camp or an individual, someone raised the battle flag and the city immediately moved to not only remove the battle flag but also took down the two flag poles.

I don't blame the city.  The SCV broke the agreement.

Confederate Battle Flag Has Divisive History-- Part 2: The Three National Flags

Continued from October 11, 2019.  Just click on the Flag's Divisive History label to see other posts.

"The banner has become more popular than the Confederacy's first official flag, the Stars and Bars, which resembled the United States' Stars and Stripes, but with three wide red and white stripes and with a blue square union with seven white stars.

"In 1863, the battle flag was officially recognized by the Confederate Congress, turning it into a political symbol, as it has been ever since."

At that time, it was incorporated into a larger white banner as a square in the upper left hand corner as the Confederacy's second national banner.  Then, a red bar was added at the opposite end of the banner so that  the flag would not be seen as a surrender flag when hanging limp.

"But, John Coski, a historian at the American Civil War Museum, who documented the banner's divisive history in his 2005 book, 'The Confederate Battle Flag:  America's Most Embattled Emblem,' warns against simplifying what it stands for."

Peaceful, Easy Feeling Out at Hainesville This Past Saturday

Well, peaceful and easy until the Prelude to the Battle of Atlanta started.  Then it got rather noisy when all the cannons opened up, followed by musketry.

This past Saturday and Sunday, Hainesville, Illinois, had its annual Civil War Encampment and Battle.  I was there on Saturday.  Even though I know a lot about the Civil War, I learned a lot more like "Battle Logs," "Goober Peas" and aerial wounds.   I'll be writing about some of these in my Saw the Elephant blog.

But, the biggest plus was that no ultra thugs showed up to mar the proceedings.  There was no Charlottesville.  And, I am talking about both sides of the Confederate issue.  And, the Lake County Forest Preserve District president evidently was not there either.  It was through his efforts that one of the premier Civil War events in the whole state and that was Civil war days at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda.  Guess he was afraid to see one of those Confederate flags, you know.  Must not offend the president, you know.

There were even a few black people learning about history out there.  And, quite a few children ranging from ages three to teens.  And I never did see one of them staring at their cell phones.  However, I did see some of the re-enactors on phones which didn't seem to look right.

One of the strangest things I ever saw was Robert E. Lee on a cell phone out at Wauconda one year.

The Confederacy Under Attack, October 18, 2019-- Part 1: Possible Confrontation in North Carolina

From the October 18, 2019, Google Alerts for Confederate.

**  SPLC releases details about upcoming Confederate monument rally.  This will take place tomorrow, Oct. 19 in Pittsboro, N.C..  I am hoping it doesn't become another Charlottesville, but with this group playing it up, it just might be.

SPLC stands for Southern Poverty Law Center which never misses a shot at the Confederacy  and seems to want the memory expunged from American history.  I'd almost go so far as to call them racist and a hate group on their own.

A confrontation over the statue is in nobody's best interest as them people on both sides are way too radicalized.

**  Sons of Confederate Veterans can't appeal statue's removal.

**  League of the South calls for backup at Confederate protest.  (This is a pro-Confederate group which will be at Pittsboro.

**  After court decision Confederate statues are unlikely ever to return to Shelby County.

Maybe We'll Get This One In: Hainesville's (Illinois) Civil War Encampment and Battle

Well, our Civil War re-enactments in the Chicagoland area were dealt a double shot by powers that be this summer.  First the annual Civil War Days event in Wauconda, Illinois, was cancelled, then reinstated, then cancelled again.  Then, the annual Civil War event in Naperville was cancelled.

The first one was cancelled because of racism on the part of the Lake County Forest Preserve's president, a black man who had problems seeing the Confederate re-enactors with their flags.  You know, the Confederate flag.

The second one was cancelled because of lack of attendance according to officials there.  But, I would like to see who brought the idea up and who voted to cancel it.

Both were long-running events and well attended (at least the one in Wauconda which I attended on several occasions).

Now, this weekend, there is going to be another re-enactment at Hainesville, Illinois.  Hopefully we will be able to get this in (and hopefully the weather will be good).

Confederate Battle Flag Has Divisive History-- Part 1

And, there was a time back in the 70s and 80s when I flew a Confederate and U.S. flag from the top of my garage and thought nothing of it and NEVER had anyone complain about it.  I also had a Confederate flag belt buckle that I wore to school every day and a SCV sticker, prominently featuring a Confederate battle flag (the proper battle flag with square dimensions instead of rectangular which was the Confederate Navy flag (or jack). on my truck cap.

Sure couldn't do that any more.

From the October 28, 2018, Chicago Tribune  "Confederate battle flag has divisive history, expert says" by Frances Stead Sellers, Washington Post.

"The distinctive configuration of white stars mounted on a blue 'X' and set against a field of red is now widely known as the Confederate flag.  But it was originally the battle flag of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia."

What Is This Civil War II?

We had a World War I and then a World War II.  We also had a Civil War (1861-1865) which was the only Civil War until essentially those murders in Charleston, S.C. on June 17, 2015.  This is the date I consider the start of Civil War II, though it had been going on for years before that, especially with the beginning of the Civil War Sesquicentennial in 2011.

June 17, 2015 was essentially April 12, 1861, with the firing on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.  It started the First Civil War.

I was writing about this continuing War on the Confederacy, or Civil War II as I call it, in my Saw the Elephant: Civil War blog, the last several months with three straight days worth of what my Google Alerts said.  It gives you the continuity and severity of those attacks.  Again, just because you don't continually read about these in your local newspaper, doesn't mean they aren't happening.

However, now that I have this new blog, I can write about Civil War II right here and keep Saw the Elephant to the First Civil War.

The Confederacy Under Attack, Sept. 18, 2019: Should Confederate Monuments Be Removed?

These are headlines taken from my September 18, 2019, Google Alerts for Confederate.

I am just giving the headline, but you can look it up on your own.

**  Where were the black Confederate soldiers?

**  Some Christians must stop worshiping the false idols of Confederate monuments.

OK, I'll Take Another Shot At This Blog

I have tried on a couple occasions to start this as an EIGHTH blog and I should have my head examined for having so many blogs.  One is too much.  But EIGHT!!!!!!

The last blog on the Second Civil War as I call this current affront to my heritage that I tried to start has not had a new entry for two years now.  If this one takes, it will not be a big one for me, just several entries a month on these attacks on the Confederacy that happen so much these days.

I have been putting the attacks in my Saw the Elephant: Civil War blog, but I want to stop that and just do the First Civil War there.  Most recently, I have been doing the last three days of each month on the attacks and for awhile didn't cover them at all.  before that the blog was almost becoming an entirely Second Civil War one.

I will continue with my sign-off name from my Saw the Elephant blog and that is "Old Secesh," the name Northerners used as a put-down on Confederates who wanted to secede from the Union (Secesh or Sesh).

Let's Hope This Takes.  --Old Secesh
