The Second Civil War: Renaming Those Confederate Army Bases

JANUARY 4, 2021

**  Letters:  Push Confederate Polk aside,  honor Chennault, a genuine Louisiana hero.  (Fort Polk in Louisiana to have name changed.  Suggesting Claire Chennault, WW II hero. I can go for that.  I am just hoping that not ALL the Confederate fort names will be renamed after Blacks.  Maybe two or three should be so honored, but not every fort.)

**  Three Virginia bases including Fort Lee  to be renamed.

**  Veto override means Fort Lee will get a new name.   Here's the process involved in getting there.  A Congressional committee will be appointed in 45 days and they have until October 2022 to come up with a list of names.  This search process will cost $2 million.  Then it will cost considerably more to actually change the names.

**  From 'Roll Tide' to 'Gator Bait', college football reckons with problematic traditions.  (These are Confederate or Antebellum-related.  Very interesting article.  I will write about it soon in my Saw the Elephant: Civil War blog.

**  Show of force on US streets and crisis at Fort Hood tested army secretary this year.  Also renaming Confederate bases.

**  Trump vetoes colossal $740 billion defense bill, breaking with Republican-led Senate.  (He did as he said he would do, evidently.  Again, I am in favor of renaming the bases, but, please not all black people.  Regardless of how good a man the Confederate officers were, the fact is that they still chose to fight their country.)

**  Fort Benning is named for a slave-owning secessionist.  That could soon change.  (Georgia)

**  Warner:  'I look forward' to overriding Trump's veto of defense partly over Confederate issue.  (Senator Mark Warner of Virginia.  From Virginia?  Surprise.  He's a Democrat?  Another surprise.)

**  Senate votes through Defense Act with huge majority and dares Donald Trump to veto move to raise troops' pay and strip Confederate names from bases.  (This means quite a few Republicans voted to pass it.)

**  Twitch updates their  harassment policy, bans Confederate flag, explains why  using slurs is permitted.

**  Defense bill opens door to erasing Confederate names at the Naval Academy, and more for Maryland military posts.

**  Historic homeowners say they have not been contacted about Confederate  marker's relocation.  (Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Bowling Green was named the state capital of the Confederate state of Kentucky in 1861.  The marker originally was on the campus of Western Kentucky University, but taken down amid BLM and white minion uproar.)

How Come All This Statue Hatred Wasn't Much Seen Before George Floyd's Death? Voting, Name Changes in Virginia, No Stamps in Oregon, That Defense Bill

**  The racial reckoning  with Confederate monuments seems new.  But it dates back more than a century.  (All this makes me wonder, how come we didn't hear about hw bad all this Confederate stuff was until after the murder of George Floyd.  Did a Confederate murder him?  Did a statue kill him?  Why didn't we hear about this before?  There might have been some anti-statue fervor, but definitely not anything like we have today.)

**  Vote to remove Confederate  monument from Harrison County Courthouse.  (Gulfport, Mississippi.  The vote will be held on Monday, Dec. 14, but the headline makes it seem like a done deal and it will be a done deal because it is a group of politicians, not the people, who will be voting on it, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors.)

**  Fairfax County begins process of finding new names for Lee Highway, other sites that honor Confederates.  (Virginia.   And there are at least 150 names that will have to be changed.  All of the new nam3es will be of Blacks, of course.  Lots of Democrats and BLMers in Virginia, you know.  Actually, they should have put the name changes up for popular vote.

**  Pendleton releases  draft ordinance that could end Confederate stamp preservation.  (Oregon.  Wasn't this the state where BLMers and rioters took over the streets of a major city for several months?)

**  Senate overwhelmingly advances defense bill that will rename Confederate bases, squashing Trump's chances of a veto.

Let the Democrats Pay for Base Renaming. After All, It's Their Baby. Fort Bragg and Fort Hood, Voting and Vetoing

DECEMBER 11, 2020

**  Fort Bragg name will be changed in three years under defense bill sent to Trump. (I have no problem with changing the base names.  Just don't rename every one of them after a black person.  Also, these name changes will entail costs.  Let the politicians who are pushing the bill pay for the name changes.)

**  Coastal  county to vote  on Confederate  monument future.   (As long as it is a vote of the people, not politicians.)

**  Ted Cruz votes against defense  funding bill that would rename Fort Hood.  (More power to him.  A rare politician with backbone enough to stand up to BLMers.)

**  Senate sends Trump defense bill he has vowed to veto.

**  Loeffler, Perdue back defense bill despite base renaming provision.  (Georgia)

**  Trump:  I'll veto any defense funding bill that removes Confederate names  from military bases.

It's kind of sad that we have come to this in our history.

The Second Civil War: UDC and SCV Need to Take Charge of Confederate Statues on Public Land and Remove Them for Safety

AUGUST 3, 2020


**  State board to discuss Confederate monument move.  (Bentonville, Arkansas.  At least as of June 1, the statue had not been "vandalized" by BLM.  UDC has agreed to relocate it.)

**  (I'd like to see the UDC and SCV voluntarily ask to receive all statues in public places (once the ones BLM has had their way with are cleaned and repaired at BLM or someone else's cost) and relocate them to safe places from the BLM folk.  The cost of relocation should also be paid by those who want the statues removed.  Hear that, BLM?)

**  Confederate flag set ablaze as part of  'Rally for Justice' in Williamsport.  (Pennsylvania.  Organized by NAACP.  Lots of BLM stuff being worn and carried.  I reckon they had to burn the flag because there were no Confederate statues around, being in Pennsylvania as it was.)

**  Nelson County's Confederate statue draws pastor's  cry for removal.  (Virginia.  he is a black pastor.)

**  Congress likely to override Trump veto on changing Army base names, key lawmaker says.

Civil War II: Getting Near to Base Name Decision, School and Virginia Again

JULY 24, 2020


**  Trump, GOP ally vow Confederate base names won't change.

**  Decency demands renaming Fort Bragg, other military sites named for Confederates.

**  Virginia evicts Confederate monuments from its state Capitol.  (The Sad Gov. strikes again.)

**  Richland High drops Confederate-related themes, becomes the Royals.  (Texas)

**  Trump says top senator will not allow removal of Confederate base names.

**  Senate passes bill to remove Confederate names from Army bases  in defiance of Trump.  They voted 86-14 to do this.  The House voted 295-125.  Evidently, a lot of Republican senators crossed over to the Democrats.

This means that a Trump veto could be overridden if the votes stay that way.

**  Senators Portman and Brown support changing military bases named after Confederate soldiers, Trump says no to change.  (Ohio senators)

Again, I support base-name changes since they did fight against the United States.  Sadly, I am sure everyone of the bases will be named after black soldiers.  They may be deserving, but because this wound is so deep and recent to so many, I would like the name changes to Blacks to be in around ten years (except for Colin Powell).  In the meantime, they could be named after other Union, World War I and World War II soldiers.

I also think that those people who really support the name changes should put their money where their mouths are and pay for it.  No money should come from public funds.

**  Overnight Defense:  House passes defense bill that Trump threatened to veto.  (And, who controls the U.S. House?  I still think those Democrats don't like us.)

**  Texas Democrats want Confederate memorials removed from Capitol.  (The Texas State Capitol.  Big surprise that Democrats would want something like that.  Their BLM strike arm will be happy.)

**  Gainesville City Council  votes to remove Confederate statue.  (Texas)
