Are these UDC members the white supremacists who put up all those racist monuments BLM has warned us about? How about those Confederate veterans above them? Some mighty desperate and despicable folks if you ask me.

**  Kandiyohi County  sheriff denounces display of Confederate flag at  County Fair, says it was bot  sheriff's vehicle.  (Minnesota)

**  NAACP seeks removal of Confederate statue.  (Randolph County, North Carolina.  The NAACP wanting something Confederate gone.  Whoever could imagine that?)

**  Groups respond to Talbot County filing motion to dismiss lawsuit to relocate statue. (Maryland.  Those "Talbot Boys" you know.)

AUGUST 18, 2021

**  Confederate monuments:  Atlanta removing 'Lion of the Confederacy' statue from Oakland Cemetery.  (Georgia.  It is being removed because of near constant hate crimes committed against it by certain "unknown" persons.  This is sad.  There is a picture of a fairly recent hate crime to the right of this.)

I have to wonder what those certain persons would think if the hate crimes were committed against one of "their" statues?

BLM Hits Atlanta Cemetery's 'Lion of the Confederacy' Statue

From the March 3, 2021,  11 Alive (Atlanta, Ga.)   "Confederate-era  statues vandalized at Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery" by Michael King.

Some of the spray-painted  graffiti included profanity and racially offensive remarks. They were "vandalized" on Feb. 28.  Two of the ones hit include "The Lion of the Confederacy" (1894) and the Confederate Obelisk (1873)

The Lion is the headstone for 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers buried there.  There were lots of BLMs on both.

Again, this IS NOT vandalism.  It is nothing short of a hate crime and should be treated and prosecuted as such.

Well, Here Come the George Floyd and O.J. Military Bases. Vandalizing Confederate Statues Is a Hate Crime.

MARCH 3, 2021

**  A tiny NC   mountain town is addressing  its big Confederate past.  (Sylva, N.C.)

**  Texas voters' views  shifting on abortion, pot, gambling and Confederate monuments, poll finds.  (Half of them would leave Confederate monuments where they are, either as is, or with historical context.  I doubt that the BLM and their supporters are going to be too keen on having people vote on keeping the statues after what happened in Virginia in November.)

**  Commissioners tasked with scrubbing Confederate base names sworn-in at first meeting.  (Let's hope that not every renaming will be for a black person, but fear that is exactly what will happen in today's climate.  I can even foresee a George Floyd military base in our future.  Probably an O.J. one as well.)

*************************************************

MARCH 4, 2021

**  Confederate-era  statues vandalized  at Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery.  (I se BLM is getting a jump on the spring riot/hate crime season.  Again, that is not a simple case of vandalism when they do it, that is nothing short of hate crimes and should be prosecuted as that.)

**  Confederate  monument protests mirror St. Augustine's  Civil Rights struggle in new exhibit.  (Florida.  A very prejudiced artist.)

**  In Alabama, a vote to keep Confederate monument protections.  (A win for us of sorts.)

**  Fate of Confederate general statue a priority in Rome as city's committees restart meetings.  (Georgia)

**  Renowned Confederate flag apologist paid $25,000 to bail out an Oregon Capitol invader.  (Of course, Oregon is the state that allowed idiots to riot for how many months in Portland?  Right next door to Washington which allowed rioters to form their own country in Seattle.  Something must be wrong with the water in the Northwest.  An interesting article in the Center Square Oregon.  Very anti right.)

**  Confederate general and KKK leader Nathan Bedford Forrest's name could be replaced by Hank Aaron at Atlanta High School after the Hall of Famer's death at 86.

News Just "Don't" Get Any Better: More Monuments Coming Down

June 10, 2020

**  'If we don't move it, they'll take it down':  Protests prompt U.S. leaders to remove Confederate statues.   (A sad statement of out time.  We have to let them break the law.)

**  Protests are bringing down Confederate monuments  around the South.

**  Confederate statue removed from Florida park.  (Jacksonville's Hemming Park.  Of a Confederate infantryman.)

**  Confederate monuments could come down for Asheville, Buncombe County.  (North Carolina.  City and town considering resolution to remove two Confederate monuments which have been victims of hate crimes.  Also the gravestone of Civil War North Carolina Governor Vance has been knocked over in local cemetery.)

**  Calls to remove Confederate statue from state capitol's front lawn.  (Atlanta, Georgia.  Statue of John Brown Gordon, a Confederate general, was defended by law enforcement so it was nor "vandalized."

**  However, a "Peace Monument" in Atlanta's Piedmont Park was "Vandalized."  Dedicated in 1911, it marked fifty years of peace between the North and South.

**  Huntsville city council president backs removal of Confederate statue at courthouse.  (Alabama)

And, remember, Wikipedia has a complete list of Confederate monuments removed, hate crimed or plans to remove.  Kind of beat the old SPLC to it.  Sorry guys.  Go to "List of monuments and memorials removed during George Floyd protests."

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on Park Name-- Part 3

Johnston's River Line along the Chattahoochee River  contains  a stretch of trenches and earthworks named for the Confederate general, who oversaw its construction  in 1864, to defend against the invasion of Union forces under General William T. Sherman.

Part of the labor force of the Line included slaves.

"Johnston's Line"  was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but the name was never made official by Cobb County.

The parkland on which it is situated was acquired by the county in a settlement with a developer in  the early 1990s.    In 2016, it was included  on an approved list of SPLOST projects and a park master plan was created in 2018.

That plan includes a small parking lot, restroom, trails, and signage highlighting archaeological features.  That would be the Confederate fortifications and I am sure contextual wording would have to be on those signs.

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on New Park Name-- Part 2:

The compromise was reached Tuesday and the 102-acre park will be named Discovery Park at the River Line.

My problem with the compromise name is that it doesn't say anything about the Civil War, which was the nod to River Line.  Perhaps calling it the Civil War River Line or Defensive River Line would have been better.

It is being developed by  using $1 million from a special one percent sales tax.

Residents of the area originally wanted it named Mapleton Discovery Park, after the surrounding area in Mapleton off Discovery Boulevard.  They said the name was inclusive of the diverse community in which the park is located.

But some historic preservationists wanted the name to include a reference to Johnston's River Line.  The River Line was a series of fortifications built partly by impressed slave labor.  If you remember the scene in "Gone With the Wind" when Scarlett saw some of Tara's slaves marching through Atlanta on their way to build defenses, this would be what it was about.

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on New Park Name-- Part 1

From the May 12, 2020, Atlanta Journal-Constitution  "Cobb approves compromise name for park with Confederate earthworks" by Meris Lutz

Cobb County, outside Atlanta, has reached a compromise over the name of a park after two years of controversy.  The park, which looks to be a scenic as well as historic one is under construction along the Chattahoochee River in Mapleton and contains Civil War earthworks.

This is a big thing for Civil War remnants around Atlanta because this, of course was a huge battle and big turning point of the war when it fell to Union forces.  Unfortunately, after the war, city growth has destroyed so much of these historic sites and fortifications.

Having a new scenic and historic park was not the bone of contention.  Of course, it was that those fortifications were built by Confederates in the defense of Atlanta.  And, you know that there are some people who are dearly trying to erase any and all mention of the "C" word.  And, in this instance the word Confederate was not even in play.

But, the name of the Confederate general, Joseph E. Johnston, was and there were those who wanted the park named Johnston's River Line Park.  Of course, this would be bringing up that Confederate thing and some people are offended by it.

You Sure Couldn't Call It Confederate Park or Johnston Park.  Way Too "C" Word for the Easily Offended.  --Old Secesh
