Are these UDC members the white supremacists who put up all those racist monuments BLM has warned us about? How about those Confederate veterans above them? Some mighty desperate and despicable folks if you ask me.

The Second Civil War: How Do You Get To Be an Activist?

MARCH 22, 2022

**  Removed  Confederate monument sets milestone in Maryland.  (The "Talbot Boys" statue.  The last Confederate monument on public space in the state.  A coalition raised the money to remove it which is exactly what should always be done for statue removal.  The folks who want it done should PAY for its removal.  It is going to a Civil War battlefield.)

**  Confederate statue condemned at court hearing.  (Virginia.  A current trial of a black man is going on.)

**  Duvall County activists protest to show support  of removing Confederate monuments.  (Jacksonville, Florida.  Again, how do you get to be an activist.  Do you have to go to college?  There sure seem to be an awful lot of black activists.)

**  Coalition pushes to return Robert E. Lee bust to downtown Fort Myers.  (Florida)

Should a Confederate Monument Be Removed If There Are More Whites Than Blacks in a Town?

MARCH 21, 2022

**  Will this predominately white town remove its Confederate monument?  (The people should vote on it.  If there are a lot of "woke" whites voting along with the Blacks, then they should have enough votes to remove it.)

**  Ketanji   Brown Jackson fought injustices while at Harvard.  (Supreme Court nominee.  Someone had a Confederate flag in their dorm window.  She objected to it.  Wonder how she feels about a BLM flag?  The fact that she was the one and only one considered for the job makes me wonder if there were any white men also qualified for the job who might have been overlooked because of their sex and race.  Makes you wonder.)

**  Push to bring Robert E. Lee bust back to downtown Fort Myers.  (Florida)

**  You might notice this Confederate emblem on Lexington's seal.  Town says you won't for long.  (South Carolina)

Here Are My Choices for Black Renamed Confederate Bases (and One More)

Since the bases are going to be renamed, I have a short list of ones I think are deserving.  I do not want every one of them renamed after a black person.  I know that goes against what a lot of people want to happen.

But, here are four Blacks who I think would be good choices"

Benjamin O.  Davis, Sr. and Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.  Senior was the first black general in the U.S. Army and the son was the first black general in the U.S. Air Force as well as commander of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Jackie Robinson fought not only to break the color barrier of Major League Baseball, but also the color barrier in the U.S. Army as an officer during World War II.

Colin Powell. I sure wish he had run for U.S. president.  I'd have voted for him in a heartbeat.

*******************************

Also, we could save a lot of money in renaming Fort Bragg because of General Edward S. Bragg who commanded the famed Iron Brigade during the Civil War.  I realize he is a white man, but very deserving in my books.

Again, I am not against renaming the Confederate base names.  After all, they did fight against the United States.  But, I do not want every base to be named after a black person.  Surely we can find some deserving white people as well.

Come On, People.   --Old Secesh

87 Names and 9 Bases: Fort Belvoir, Fort Benning and Fort Bragg

MARCH 18, 2022

**  Commission:  Fort Belvoir's name remains, for now.  (Virginia.  Not a Confederate general, but named after a plantation and all that entails.  You know.)

**  Renaming of Fort Bragg:  List of potential new names released.  (North Carolina  This article in the Fayetteville Observer also has a list of all 87 names under consideration.  Colin Powell is the only one  O originally recommended.)

I will write down my four recommendations in the next post.

**  87 finalists, 9 Army bases:  One of these options could be Fort Benning's new name.  (Georgia)

Confederadication: Renaming the Bases

MARCH 18, 2022

**  Here are the possible new names for 9 Army bases that honored Confederates.

The Naming Commission formed by Congress in 2021 received 34,000 recommendations for new names and  have narrowed it to just 87 now.

Some of them are:

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Alwyn Cashe

Roy Benavidez

 Colin Powell

 Harriet Tubman

Gary Gordon

Randy Shughart

I just hope they are not all renamed for Blacks.  I am in favor of three or four, but not all of them.

A Cost to Renaming Roads and Streets

From the February 18, 2022, Fairfax County Times (Virginia)  "Highway name changes in Fairfax County could come with hefty  price tag" by Sravan Gannavarapu.

In December the Confederate Names Task Force voted to rename the Lee Highway and Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway.

Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity said the cost for renaming these could come between $1-4 million due to significant fiscal impacts and customer impacts on businesses and residents.

And, then there is the cost of making new signs, taking the old ones down and putting up the new ones.

It was noted that recently  Wade Hampton Drive in Vienna had its name changed to Liberty  Lane.  As a result, each of the town's property owners  will receive $500 for out-of-pocket costs associated with the name change.

***********************

Personally, I would like to see name changes put up to a vote.  If the majority of the people want the name changed, then change it.  But, have the cost of changing the name go to those who voted to change it.
