Are these UDC members the white supremacists who put up all those racist monuments BLM has warned us about? How about those Confederate veterans above them? Some mighty desperate and despicable folks if you ask me.

Some Folks Mad About Hill's Reburial Ceremony

JANUARY 26, 2023

**  Funeral for Confederate general reburied in Virginia sparks backlash.  (Mostly online.  I don't think any persons were crass enough to show up at the solemn proceedings of the reburial to spout their hatred.)

**  Lee Park and rec center renamed.  (Alxandria, Va.)

**  Fort Rucker may take on a new name this year.  (Alabama.  It will be renamed Fort Novosel.)

Florida, Maryland, Army, Warren Buffett and Louisiana

JULY 31, 2022

**  An about-face:  A monument honoring black Union soldiers is re-turned to face Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers. (Florida.  It originally faced away from the park so visitors couldn't see his face.  I am all in favor of statues for Blacks when appropriate.)

NOVEMBER 19, 2021

**  Waynesboro leaders looking to remove Confederate monument from downtown park.  (Virginia)

**  Jacksonville to decide  fate of Confederate monuments in 2022.  (Florida.  Again, I don't understand why Blacks are so upset about the statues when their own people are shooting and killing each other.  Seems like that would be a bigger issue.)

I'm All In Favor of Black Monuments, But.... Now, Even the Color Grey Comes Under Fire.

NOVEMBER 15, 2021

**  Sculpture a tribute to US Colored Troops liberation of Wilmington.  (Wilmington, North Carolina.  This is a good one to  put up as many USCT regiments were involved in the capture of the city.  However, Wilmington was not liberated.  It was captured.  Also, to put  up a statue to Blacks when you're taking down statues to whites.  I just don't know.)

You can never have too many historical statues or markers in my book.

Where and How I Stand on Removal of Confederate Statues-- Part 2

I would prefer that the Confederate statues remain where they are.   I would be for Blacks erecting statues of their people if historically connected to the city or town.  But, I am of the belief that the Confederate statues will have to be moved from public spaces, so support that reluctantly.  Sadly, Whites have to make amends for the Jim Crow era  and this is one way to do so.

Those statues should be repaired or have spray paint removed and turned over to Confederate organizations like the SCV or UDC.  They will be the ones to find a suitable place to relocate, probably cemeteries or battlefields.   Maybe even privately-owned Confederate parks.

All expenses for removal, storage, relocation and re-erecting should be paid by those who don't want the statues there as opposed to being paid by public money.  Provisos should be in place to cover further damage by Blacks and their white minions in the future, but hopefully that won't happen because they got their way and should be satisfied.

Renaming Those New Orleans Streets

MARCH 23, 2021

**  Confederate Reckoning:  New Orleans commission suggests new names  for 37  streets and parks.  March 22, 2021, Daily Advertiser by Andrew J. Yawn.

It was my guess in the last post that all of these would be renamed for Blacks.  Unfortunately, they did not have the full list of 37, but a quick glance at some of them in the article confirmed what I thought.

I would have liked to see who was in the commission. How many are Blacks?

The article starts off with:  "The time of New Orleans streets carrying the names of Confederates and white supremacists may be reaching a dead end.  In New Orleans, a commission of volunteers and  historical experts has identified 34 streets and three parks that  it says unjustly preserve the legacy of racist figures."

Here are some:

**  Robert E. Lee Boulevard renamed  for Allen  Toussaint, famed New Orleans musician who once lived on it.

**  P.G.T. Beauregard Street renamed  for local Freedom Rider , Doris Jean Castle.

**  Chares Magill Conrad, formed Louisiana Senator and Confederate delegate, renamed for Jaspar, a slave who escaped bondage in 1855.

**  Patton Street (plantation owner and member of the White League)  for Nils Douglas, a prominent Civil Rights attorney for Congress of Racial Equality.

Edgar Hoover's name should stay on headquarters.   (March 21, 2021 Deadline Detroit.  Essentially, though Hoover did many bad things, he also did many good things.  Anyone interested in the renaming question should read this before deciding.)

**  Florida community campaigns to change school name.  (Jacksonville.  Robert E. Lee High School.  As I've said before, if the majority of its students are Blacks, then it should be renamed.)

*****************************************

MARCH 23, 2021

**  'Powerful reminder of racism.'  Student  movement works to relocate KY Confederate  statue.  (Danville)

**  Committee:  Botetourt County Confederate monument should move.  (Virginia.  Again, any question as to moving a monument should be left up to the people, not a governmental body.  Hopefully, with Virginia's sad record on removals, the voters will remember in the next election and throw these people out.)

**  Centre College needs to heed calls for racial equity:  Start by moving  Confederate statue.  (Danville, Kentucky)

**  Confederate Reckoning:  New Orleans commission  suggests new names for 37  streets and parks.  (Before I even take a look at the "suggestions," let me guess that every single one of them will be named after a black person.)

Confederadication: Tarring and Feathering a Criminal Offense? John Lewis, Macon, Negro Bar, and a Confederate Face Mask

JANUARY 23, 2021

**  Criminal charges   under review after  Confederate statue 'tarred and feathered,' painted with clown makeup.  (Allendale, Michigan. Two recent acts against the statue. The culprits admitted who they were, but not afraid, at the time, of breaking any law.  Maybe they were wrong?)

**  Task force backs John Lewis tribute at Confederate monument site.  Decatur, Georgia.  John Lewis deserves a statue or commemoration, but I'd hate to see it go up at the Confederate statue site.  That is rubbing salt into the wound.)

**  Macon wrestles with history over dispute over Confederate statues.  (Georgia)

**  'The Confederate flag starts flying':  Park's controversial name stirs debate over race and history.   (Folsom, California.  Park's name is "Negro Bar."  Well, you know, the name Negro.  This name comes from where black miners came during the Gold Rush days in the state.  I don't know, but to me, this would be a historical name and shouldn't be offensive.  You never think of black prospectors when you hear the words Gold Rush.)

**  On first day back at school, Oakville High student wears Confederate flag face mask.  (Missouri.  Again, are BLM face masks allowed?)

Removal of Confederate Statues at Gettysburg Would Be a Mistake. VMI, Alabama, Voting on Removal and Memphis

OCTOBER 31, 2020

**  Marshall County to spend $3,000 to protect Confederate monument, flag.  (Albertville, Alabama  This money should come from BLM, even though the fences are going up because of BLM activity.)

**  Alabama County plans fence  to protect Confederate monument.  (Albertville, Alabama.)

**  General election results for moving Confederate symbols in Franklin and Halifax counties on Nov. 3, 2020.  (North Carolina.  It will certainly be interesting to see how voting of statue removals shows tomorrow.  My thought is that most of the votes will go toward keeping the monuments, but, we will see.)

The Second Civil War: Mosby, Schools, Virginia, Michigan, Charleston and Soviet Union

OCTOBER 10, 2020

**  Relatives of Confederate colonel John Mosby support name change at Mosby Woods Elementary.  (Virginia.  If the majority of the students are Blacks I would support that.  There should be no school named after a Confederate if more than half of the students are Blacks.)

**  Confederate Park to be renamed for late commissioner.  (Alabama)

**  Jackson school named after a Confederate colonel accepting nominations for new name.  (Mississippi.  Named after Col. John Logan Power.

**  New site approved for Caroline County Confederate Civil War monument.  (Bowling Green, Virginia.  Will be relocated to Greenlawn Cemetery.  Expected to cost $25,000.   Again, those who want it moved should pay for it.)

**  Man accused in Whitmer kidnapping plot defended Confederate statue in June.  (Michigan.  Kidnapping plot of Michigan governor.)

The State of Confederate Statues in North Carolina-- Part 4

McClatchy News additional Confederate monuments taken down:

**  GREENSBORO (1):  A Confederate monument at a city-owned cemetery was "toppled" during the Fourth of July weekend.

**  WINSTON-SALEM (1):  The city removed a Confederate statue downtown March 12 citing public safety concerns because of protests for and against it at the site the preceding months.

**  CLINTON (1):  A statue outside of the Sampson County Courthouse was removed July 12 just hours after being "toppled."  "Toppled" means a hate crime was committed against it.

**  GRANVILLE COUNTY (1):  A Confederate statue was removed  June 24 after a "credible threat was made to remove it."

**  ROCKY MOUNT (1):  The city started to remove the Battle Park Confederate statue on June 29, the same day an apparent noose was found on a nearby tree.

**  VANCE COUNTY (1):  A Confederate statue was removed  from outside a county office building in July  and taken to an undisclosed site.

**  WILMINGTON (2):  On June 25, the city announced that two Confederate statues had been removed undercover of the night.

All so sad.  But,if removal and safekeeping will keep the BLMers and their white minions from doing their hateful stuff to them, I support that.

Statues Toppled Across U.S. As Rioting Continues-- Part 3: Francis Scott Key and Father Junipero Serra

Also torn down in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park was a statue of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the "Star-Spangled Banner.'  The reasons were that Key owned slaves and he had that one part in the National Anthem where he wrote, "No refuge could be found for the hireling and slave," which is about the British arming escaped slaves.

Did anyone see Kappynapper running away from this?

Protesters also pulled down the statue of Spanish missionary Junipero Serra, an 18th century Roman Catholic priest who founded nine of California's 21 Spanish missions and is credited with bringing Roman Catholicism to the Western United States.

However, Serra forced Indians to stay at those missions after they were converted or face brutal punishment.  His statues have been defaced in California for several years by people who said he destroyed tribes  and their culture.

Police officers responded to the park but didn't intervene.

Since when do police not intervene when public or property is being destroyed.  Well, actually that has happened a whole lot this month.

Statues Toppled Across U.S. As Rioting Continues (And Many Were Not Even Confederate)-- Part 2: Even U.S. Grant

"In San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, protesters sprayed red paint and wrote 'slave owner' on the pedestals before using ropes to bring down the statues and drag them down grassy slopes amid cheers and applause."

Believe me, when this happens, these people are no longer protesting, but rioting and should be arrested for destroying public property.

The statues targeted included a bust of Ulysses Grant, who was the U.S.president after he was the general who beat the Confederates and ended the Civil War."  You'd really think the BLMers would honor and cherish him for that, wouldn't you?

"Protesters (rioters and hate crimers)  said Grant owned slaves.  He married into a slave-owning family, but had no problem fighting to end slavery.  Grant also supported the 1868 Republican platform when he won the presidency which called  for allowing black men to continue voting in the South."

Can You Believe That?  --Old Secesh

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on Park Name-- Part 3

Johnston's River Line along the Chattahoochee River  contains  a stretch of trenches and earthworks named for the Confederate general, who oversaw its construction  in 1864, to defend against the invasion of Union forces under General William T. Sherman.

Part of the labor force of the Line included slaves.

"Johnston's Line"  was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but the name was never made official by Cobb County.

The parkland on which it is situated was acquired by the county in a settlement with a developer in  the early 1990s.    In 2016, it was included  on an approved list of SPLOST projects and a park master plan was created in 2018.

That plan includes a small parking lot, restroom, trails, and signage highlighting archaeological features.  That would be the Confederate fortifications and I am sure contextual wording would have to be on those signs.

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on New Park Name-- Part 2:

The compromise was reached Tuesday and the 102-acre park will be named Discovery Park at the River Line.

My problem with the compromise name is that it doesn't say anything about the Civil War, which was the nod to River Line.  Perhaps calling it the Civil War River Line or Defensive River Line would have been better.

It is being developed by  using $1 million from a special one percent sales tax.

Residents of the area originally wanted it named Mapleton Discovery Park, after the surrounding area in Mapleton off Discovery Boulevard.  They said the name was inclusive of the diverse community in which the park is located.

But some historic preservationists wanted the name to include a reference to Johnston's River Line.  The River Line was a series of fortifications built partly by impressed slave labor.  If you remember the scene in "Gone With the Wind" when Scarlett saw some of Tara's slaves marching through Atlanta on their way to build defenses, this would be what it was about.

Cobb County, Ga., Reaches Compromise on New Park Name-- Part 1

From the May 12, 2020, Atlanta Journal-Constitution  "Cobb approves compromise name for park with Confederate earthworks" by Meris Lutz

Cobb County, outside Atlanta, has reached a compromise over the name of a park after two years of controversy.  The park, which looks to be a scenic as well as historic one is under construction along the Chattahoochee River in Mapleton and contains Civil War earthworks.

This is a big thing for Civil War remnants around Atlanta because this, of course was a huge battle and big turning point of the war when it fell to Union forces.  Unfortunately, after the war, city growth has destroyed so much of these historic sites and fortifications.

Having a new scenic and historic park was not the bone of contention.  Of course, it was that those fortifications were built by Confederates in the defense of Atlanta.  And, you know that there are some people who are dearly trying to erase any and all mention of the "C" word.  And, in this instance the word Confederate was not even in play.

But, the name of the Confederate general, Joseph E. Johnston, was and there were those who wanted the park named Johnston's River Line Park.  Of course, this would be bringing up that Confederate thing and some people are offended by it.

You Sure Couldn't Call It Confederate Park or Johnston Park.  Way Too "C" Word for the Easily Offended.  --Old Secesh
