Candace Owens Defends Confederate Flag

From the December 21, 2022, Media Matters.

I had to look her up after seeing the video.  She is a black woman of a conservative bent.  So she definitely is opinionated.  However, what she had to say struck a cord with me because people whose ancestors, like mine, fought for the Confederacy, should not be made to feel ashamed of them.

She was incorrect on a few things she said, but overall made her point.

Here is what she said:

"I do not see a problem with people whose family members died fighting for that flag to be able to wave it high.  It is historical and the idea that your son or daughter went and marched in a war--  that people are so stupid they think they were fighting for slavery, those people who fought were piss-poor and never had a slave a single day in their life.

"They fought for the south and their sons signed up, went to war, and now they're told that even having a flag or having any pride for their relatives is something wrong and dirty and backwards and racist and associated with slavery.

"People are so ignorant about slavery and the numbers on slavery.  I mean, the idea that everyone had slaves in the south is so stupid.  It was incredibly uberwealthy.  It's be like people believing that everyone today has a yacht.

"I mean, it's just so--  I'm just going to stop ranting about it.  The answer is people should be allowed to keep their c(C)onfederate  flags and wave them because it represents an element of history."

Those Other Supreme Court Justices in the Dred Scott Decision: Seven Voted Against Dred Scott and All Seven Were Democrats

As I said in the last post, only one of the Supreme Court Justices who voted on the Dred Scott Decision, was not a Democrat.  Benjamin Robbins Curtis (Massachusetts) who was a Whig.

The other justices  and state they were from:

Roger Taney  (Maryland)

John McLean  (Ohio)

James Moore Wayne  (Georgia)

John Catron  (Tennessee)

Peter Vivian Daniel  (Virginia)

Samuel Nelson  (New York)

Robert Cooper Grier  (Pennsylvania)

John Archibald Campbell   (Alabama)

So, five were from slave-holding states.  This means that two from free states also voted with the majority.  I would have expected a 5-4 vote.

So, if you hate Taney for writing the court's decision, you  also might want to think about the other six justices who agreed with him.  But, you have to remember, this was the way of thinking back then.  And, please don't forget that the justices who voted against Dred Scott were Democrats.  This was also the party that kept Blacks down for so long.

House Votes to Toss Taney Bust, Confederate Statues-- Part 4: What About the Other Six Justices Who Voted With Taney?

The Roger Taney bust will be replaced with one of Thurgood Marshall, the first black justice to serve on the nation's highest court.  Thurgood Marshall is a very deserving man of an honor, but, I have to ask this question.  Does EVERY thing that's replaced have to be replaced with a black person?

The two-foot high marble bust of Taney is outside a room in the Capitol where the Supreme Court met from 1810 to 1860.  It was in that room that Taney, the nation's fifth chief justice, announced the Dred Scott Decision, sometimes called the worst decision in the court's history.

The Supreme Court held that Scott, as a black man, was not a citizen and therefore had no right to sue for freedom, and found that legislation restricting slavery in certain territories was unconstitutional.

Regardless of how we view it now, the fact is that slaves were considered property at the time and as such did not have the right of a free person.  The Supreme Court voted 7-2 that Scott was not a free man and Taney wrote the opinion.  Now, Taney is held in ill-regard, but, shouldn't also all six members who voted with Taney be held in this esteem.

The other members of the Supreme Court in 1857 were McLean, Wayne, Catron, Daniel, Nelson, Grier, Curtis and Campbell.  All were Democrats (notice this, ALL WERE DEMOCRATS) except Curtis who was a Whig.  So Taney and six other Democrats voted that slaves were not citizens.

Benjamin Robbins Curtis and John McLean were the only two who voted against it.  The others obviously were not yet "Woke."

**  'Body Bags' of slaves latest weapon in Confederate flag fight.  (Marshall County, Alabama.  They represent slaves owned by John Marshall, the county's namesake.  Gets me to wondering.  How much work can you get out of a dead slave?  Probably not too much.  Why would Marshall kill his slaves.  Inquiring minds want to know.)

John Marshall was the U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice and owned 200 slaves during his lifetime.  Must have been a really bad man.

**  Confederate reckoning:   The teaching of the history of the Confederacy.   (How should topics such as slavery, the Confederacy, Reconstruction and the Jim Crow era be taught.  I believe all should be taught.  growing up for me, slavery was glossed over, the Confederacy and Reconstruction played up and really nothing said about the Jim Crow era.  All of these should be  taught.  However, comparing Confederates to Nazis is absolutely not acceptable.)

**  Enslaved, terrorized,  disenfranchised: Black Americans still found ways to change America.  (New York Times.  Big surprise that they would print an article like this.

**  Virginia  police chief fired as  felony charges dropped in Confederate vandalism  case.  (Portsmouth.  A Virginia state senator riled a crowd to destroy a Confederate monument.  Why she would still be allowed to be in the state government could only happen in a state that has descended into the depths as far as Virginia.  She should be in jail.  What she was trying to have happen was nothing less than a hate crime, something that is generally frowned upon unless it is against something Confederate.

Plus, obviously her devious power reaches far enough to get someone for for doing their job correctly.  Only in Virginia.  What has happened to Virginia?

University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson-- Part 2: 'Contextualize'

 While removing the George Rogers Clark statue and changing names of other Confederate/slave owner-named places, the university has to reach a decision as to what to do about its connection with its founder, Thomas Jefferson.

A big reason the university is what it is today is because of what Mr. Jefferson prescribed for its construction and aims back in the early 1800s.

The Univ. of Virginia Board of Visitors also voted to "contextualize" the statue of Thomas Jefferson-- primary author of the Declaration of Independence, third president of the United States and UVA's founder.  The statue is located on the north side of the university's rotunda.

In a press release, the school "acknowledged Jefferson's contributions to the University and the nation, but also pointed out that he owned slaves and used slave labor at UVA, in direct contradiction to the ideals of liberty and equality he professed."

I have seen this so-called context on other statues.  Sadly, what this means is a whole lot of opinions that are now in vogue, but down the line will not be.  I could accept something along these lines.  Besides his accomplishments, it should say: "Jefferson owned slaves which was legal in the country at that time and also he had slaves do a lot of the construction of this school.  His view of liberty and equality reflected the general views of most white people at the time and they did not believe in that for black people."

Maryland's Flag Has Confederate Symbols. U.S. House Votes to Remove Confederate Monuments from Gettysburg

**  VERIFY:  Yes, Maryland's state flag has a Confederate symbol.  (Marylanders who fought for the Confederacy used the Crossland Banner.  Now, this flag has to go.)

**  Decades ago, a press association dedicated a plaque to a Civil War-era journalist who supported slavery.  Now it wants it removed.  (Plaque at Fortress Monroe for John Mitchell, Irish freedom fighter.)

**  Opinion:  US House voted to remove rebel monuments from Gettysburg.  The Senate must stop this.  (Passed House July 24 by a 224-189 vote.  has a provision to have all Confederate "commemorative works"--  every monument, statue and possibly all informational  brigade and regiment markers, removed not just at Gettysburg, but all National Parks in the U.S.  This is why Democrats must be stopped.)

**  Lawmaker criticized for honoring Confederate, KKK figure.  (Alabama.  State Representative Will Dismukes Republican.  On his Facebook page attended and spoke at a Nathan Bedford Forrest birthday observance.  I kind of figured that with the headline that this would be about Forrest.  Democrats, of course, mortified.  Even Republicans on his case.  It was okay to honor Forrest for over a hundred years, but not now?)

**  Newly elected Texas GOP  Chairman Allen West  stands up for monuments, opposes mask  mandates.  (And, he was a former Army officer and U.S. Representative.  And, he is a black man who describes himself as a super conservative.  I don't know about his stance on masks, but he is a breath of fresh air in the political arena, along with Will Dismukes.  So great to find politicians who are not dupes of BLM.)

**  Activists demand stop to Confederate displays at Charleston battery, criticize enforcement.  (South Carolina.  But they think their BLM displays aren't offensive.  Really?)

**  Confederate section of cemetery damaged.    (Oakland Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.  Spray painted "Black Lives Matter" and "F*** Trump" on obelisk marking the site where 900 unknown Confederates are buried.)

**  Opinion:  I'm an archaeologist.  I don't worry removing monuments  will erase history.  (Never though I'd hear an archaeologist say something like this.)

**  Vance monument in downtown Asheville shrouded.  (North Carolina.  Asheville the new Richmond, Va.  The new "Sad" town in North Carolina.  I am wondering when they will be changing the city name and county name because they were named after plantation owners.  You know, the "S" Word.)

**  Did Portland's mayor actually stand with rioters on the 55th day of riots in his city and raise his fist and yell "Black Lives Matter."  It's Seattle all over again.  Something must be wrong with the water out in the Pacific Northwest.  Perhaps drinking too many Starbucks.

Not only is he not stopping the riots, he is abetting them.  As the guy once said, "Inconceivable!!"   Another Democrat.  What is wrong with the Democrat mayors across the United States like Seattle, Richmond, Birmingham, etc.?

I understand he got tear gassed like a common rioter.)

**  Asheville, N.C., votes for slavery reparations.  City Council votes 7-0 for it.  Six members are Democrats, two are Blacks and four are women.  Asheville is in  Buncombe County.

Buncombe County named after American Revolution soldier Edward Buncombe  who was also a plantation owner.  The name of the county will have to be changed.  You know.  Plantations mean you-know-what.

And, Asheville was named after Samuel Ashe (1725-1813), 9th governor of the state of North Carolina.  North Carolina had slaves back then.  As such, Asheville will HAVE to change its name.  Oh, yes, by the way, Samuel Ashe was a rich man and he had a PLANTATION.  That means he had you-know-what (the "S" word).

Oh yes, something else about Asheville that you should know.  Not only is the name now offensive to Blacks, but the earliest white settler was killed by Indians and then avenged, so there were bad things done to Indians.  So, now the name must be changed for what they did to the Indians.

Asheville now needs to change its name as well as Buncombe Couty, where Asheville is located.

Plus, they should be working on ways to come up with those reparations for their sin of the "S" word.

Change the Names Asheville and Buncombe County.  You Must be More Sensitive.  Your Ancestors and Forefathers Were Really Horrible People.  They Owned the "S" Word.  --Old Secesh
