Are these UDC members the white supremacists who put up all those racist monuments BLM has warned us about? How about those Confederate veterans above them? Some mighty desperate and despicable folks if you ask me.

All Removed Confederate Items Should Be Turned Over to UDC and SCV

FEBRUARY 6, 2022

**  Post-Confederate law bars Jan. 6 speaker Rep. Cawthorn from office, challengers argue.

**  Two Confederate pedestals coming down today.  (Sad R.)

**  Bill would return  Nathan Bedford Forrest bust to Confederate group in Maury County.  (Tennessee.  Return to SCV.  Any and all Confederate items should always be turned over to the SCV or UDC, all expenses paid and with funds to place it elsewhere.)

**  Nearly 50 Confederate memorials  removed, renamed, and relocated in 2021:  Report.  (Daily Wire.  They describe the SPLC as a progressive group.  They seem to be a progressive hate group all right.)

**  Eleanor Holmes Norton, Cory Booker seek Congressional Gold Medal for  black Civil War veterans.  These are two black U.S. senators.  I agree, the brave Blacks who served in the Union forces should receive recognition, but the Gold Medal would be a bit much.  Hey folks, the Confederate soldiers were pretty brave too.)

I'm All In Favor of Black Monuments, But.... Now, Even the Color Grey Comes Under Fire.

NOVEMBER 15, 2021

**  Sculpture a tribute to US Colored Troops liberation of Wilmington.  (Wilmington, North Carolina.  This is a good one to  put up as many USCT regiments were involved in the capture of the city.  However, Wilmington was not liberated.  It was captured.  Also, to put  up a statue to Blacks when you're taking down statues to whites.  I just don't know.)

You can never have too many historical statues or markers in my book.

**  Westford  schools may remove  'grey' from mascot's name, rebrand with students' help.  (Westford, Massachusetts.  How far will they go?  Come On, Man.)

NOVEMBER 16, 2021

**  The Old Home Town makes the proper decision on Confederate statue.  (Jackson, Tennessee)

**  Confederate Memorial Park to host Christmas event.  (Marbury, Alabama.  I wonder how this park has escaped attack?)

NOVEMBER 17, 2021

**  Tar Heel Voices:  The people never spoke on statues.  (Agreed.  To remove a statue should always entail a vote by the people.)

NOVEMBER 7, 2021

**  Virginia monument honors three black soldiers  executed by Confederates.  (Washington Post)

**  No Confederate flags at fire depts.  (Five Towns, New York)

**  Commentary:  As Confederate statues fall, build monuments to black heroes at risk of being forgotten.  (Here's an idea. Let the Confederate monuments stand and also build the ones to Blacks.)

**********************************

NOVEMBER 8, 2021

**  Confederate Rose's large shrub, pink flowers appealing to  gardeners.  (Oh, no!!  Now we have a racist flower!!)

**  Culpeper County memorial honors story of black Civil War heroes. (Virginia.  A new monument honoring three USCT soldiers captured and executed by Confederate soldiers during the war.)

Confederadication: Whenever Ownership Unclear, Turn the Statue Over to UDC or SCV.

OCTOBER 23, 2021

**  Black Georgia students suspended  for planning protest  of Confederate  flag.  (High school)

**  Attorney petitions  U.S. Supreme Court to hear case on relocation of Lakeland Confederate statue.  (Florida.  Yep!  And see far that gets.)

**  Confederate officers' treason to be scrubbed from  military base names.  (Why wasn't it treason when these bases were named back in the 1930s?  One has to wonder.  What happened  between then and now?)

***************************

OCTOBER24, 2021

**  Remove a Confederate statue?  A Tennessee city did this instead.  (Franklin.  They put up a statue to the USCT.  I whole-heartedly agree with doing this.   You can never have too many monuments to the past.)

**  What is the status of Pittsboro's removed Confederate monument?  (North Carolina.  It's in limbo over ownership.  Whenever you're not sure of ownership, turn it over to the UDC or SCV.)

Virginia 'Woke.' Community Colleges, Texas, Georgia, Lynching, Confederate Flags, and a Union Monument

OCTOBER 11, 2021

**  Virginia changes names  of multiple community colleges amid racial reckoning.  (Washington Post.  Big surprise they'd write something like this.  You must mean "Woke."

**************************

OCTOBER 12, 2021

**  Caldwell County Courthouse Confederate monument will move to museum.  (Texas)

**  Georgia students suspended after making plans to protest Confederate flag.

**  Confederate monuments  and the history of lynching in the American South.  (I doubt that any statue lynched anybody.)

**  Norwin students wear Confederate flag to school.  (Pennsylvania)

**  County hopes to meet with Union monument owners.  (Perquimans County, North Carolina.  They want to move it to the courthouse, where there is a Confederate monument.  This monument is dedicated to black soldiers in the war.  I can definitely go with that.  All sides of history need to be shown.)

Civil War II: North Carolina, Key West, Bases, Billboards, Flags, Maine, Statues and Fairs

JULY 29, 2020

**  Hertford monument honors black Union troops.  (North Carolina.  As they rightfully deserve.)

**  "Love Me Do:  The dark side of Mallory Square.  (Key West, Florida.  Will the name of this popular sunset spot have to be changed now?

**  Renaming bases doesn't dishonor veterans who trained there.

**  Timeline  of BLM billboard , adjacent Confederate flag.

**  New Gloucester group calls on AMVETS to stop using Confederate flag.  (Maine  The group is BLM Allies.)

**  Nelson County's Confederate statue  draws local pastor's cry for removal.  (Virginia.  Big surprise there.  The pastor is a member of the NAACP.  Big surprise there.)

**  Confederate flag debate  at Northeast Ohio county fairs.  (Again, if a Confederate flag being offered for sale offends you, don't buy it.  That simple.)

Still "Silent", Confederate Flag, St. Augustine and a Confederate Rose

February 22, 2020

Again, these are headlines from newspapers and media outlets around the country.

**  Virginia is poised  to let cities remove Confederate monuments.  It's about damn time.

**  Confederate group has 45 days to return 'Silent Sam' to UNC.  (And, then what will UNC do with it?  Probably just bury it.)

**  The history of the Confederate flag and what it represents.  (A very anti-Confederate article.  What does this have to do with teens and their fashions?  Written by Jameelah Nasheed.  I reckon that explains it.  No racism here, of course.)

**  St. Augustine wants community's input on memorial to honor black troops.  (Florida--  If black troops played a role in St. Augustine during the war I'll be all for it.  You can never have too many things about history.)

**  Sharing flower cuttings is a joy.  (Andalusia Star-News,  Alabama--  This is about the Confederate Rose flower.  I reckon there will be those people who want to change this name.  You know, slavery and all.)

**  Statue of archsegregationist remains in Capitol Square.  (Richmond, Va.  -- Statue of Harry F. Byrd, Sr.  From the Richmond Free Press, a black newspaper.)

Judge Them By the Standards of Their Time, Not Today's

January 29, 2020

**  Virginia group:  Confederate statues should stay, with changes.  (A Virginia Beach commission recommends historical context by it and a statue honoring black heritage.)

**  Nathan Bedford Forrest bust resolution hearing brings out defense of Confederate general.  (Resolution to remove it introduced by a black legislator.  SCV defending it.  One said, "An individual must be judged by the standards  on the times in which they live-- not  the standards of today."  Very true observation.)

**  Richmond City Council okays procedure for a new statue on Monument Avenue honoring USCT.  But also wants to remove the one of Jefferson Davis and put historical context by other Confederate statues.

About That Proposed USCT Monument in Richmond, Virginia

In the last post, I mentioned that the Richmond City Council, which has been doing everything it can do to have the Confederate statues on Monument Avenue removed, is thinking about putting a new statue up there to honor black soldiers from the USCT (United States Colored Troops).

Again, I always support anything that relates to history.  However, I stand completely opposed to this current effort to remove all Confederate statues, memorials and plaques from all public spaces (and even private).  I am hoping that this current movement by Virginia Democrats to push this agenda does not mean I will have to vote for Republicans in the next election.  I would rather pick and choose my candidates as usual.

Anyway, I got to wondering about the USCT regiment that the Richmond City Council wants to be placed on Monument Avenue, especially in regards to the 14 Medals of Honor they received so did some research.

I will write about that research in my Saw the Elephant: Civil War blog later today.  To view it, go to My Blogs column to the right of this and click on it.

Richmond City Council Looks At Putting Up USCT Statue on Monument Avenue

From the January 22, 2020, Fort Worth Star-Telegram  "Richmond city council endorse funding for new statue"  AP.

Richmond, Virginia

Here's a story that really puts a burn on things.  With all its efforts to remove any and all things Confederate from the city that was the capital of the Confederacy for most of its existence, here is the latest thing they want to do.

A panel has advanced a resolution  for a new statue on the city's famed Monument Avenue that would honor black soldiers who fought during the Civil War.  It would memorialize a United States Colored Troops (USCT) regiment which had 14 members awarded the Medal of Honor.  They did not say what USCT regiment.  Too bad, as I would be definitely interested in that information.

The city council might take action on it as early as next week.

The commission also recommended removing the statue of Jefferson Davis from Monuments Avenue.

Now, I wouldn't mind a statue honoring the USCT on the avenue, but let's leave the Confederate ones.  How about a compromise?

Leave the Confederate statues (and add context plaques if needed) and put up this monument as long as it doesn't involve public funds.

But, Take Down The Confederate Monuments and Put Up This One Isn't Going to Work for Me.  --Old Secesh
