List of Renamed Bases-- Part 7: Fort Polk Becomes Fort Johnson, Fort Rucker becomes Fort Novolsel

The new names of the last two of the eight on the list:

Fort Polk, Louisiana, will become Fort Johnson after Army Sergeant William Henry Johnson, who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for action in the Argonne Forest in France during World War I.  A black man.

Fort Rucker, Alabama, will become Fort Novosel, after Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael  J. Novosel, a helicopter pilot who received the Medal of Honor for a medevac mission under fire in Vietnam while under fire where he  saved 29 soldiers.

List of Renamed Bases-- Part 6: Fort Hood becomes Fort Cavazos, Fort Pickett Becomes Fort Barfoot

Fort Hood, Texas, becomes Fort Cavazos, named for  Army General Richard E. Cavazos, who received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism during the Vietnam War.

Fort Pickett, Virginia, becomes Fort Barfoot, in honorof Army  Tech Sgt.  Van T. Barfoot, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions with the 45th Infantry Division during World War II in Italy.

He was a Choctaw Indian.

List of Renamed Bases-- Part 5: Fort A.P. Hill Becomes Fort Walker, Fort Fort Lee Becomes Fort Gregg-Adams

Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia becomes Fort Walker.  Renamed after Doctor Mary Edwards Walker, the first female surgeon in the Civil War and the only woman awarded the Medal of Honor.

Fort Lee, Virginia will be renamed Fort Gregg-Adams, after Lieutenant General  Arthur Gregg and Lt. Col. Charity Adams.

Gregg was a key figure in the integration of black soldiers into the Army.  Adams was the highest ranking black woman in World War II.

MARCH 9, 2023

**  Confederate's name removed from Navy survey ship.  (USNS Maury, named for Confederate oceanographer pioneer Matthew Maury was renamed USS Marie Tharp.  She was an oceanographer as well and, believe it or not, a white woman.  Quite often all renamings are to Blacks.)

**  U.S. Army looking for local artist to design new logo for soon-to-be named Fort Eisenhower.  (It was Fort Gordon in Georgia.)

**  Board of Supervisors sends Fort Belvoir renaming concerns up to Secretary of the Army.  (Virginia)

**  Fort Polk to be renamed  Fort Johnson Summer of 2023.   (Louisiana.  Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a black World War I Medal of Honor recipient.  He is deserving of the honor, but, again, why do so many bases and things have to be renamed for Blacks?  Then name change is expected to cost $1.4 million for this one.  I say that those who want the name changed should have to pay for it themselves.)

**  Virginia National Guard site renamed in attempt to detach from Confederate ties.  (Fort Pickett will be renamed Fort Barfoot.  World War II Medal of Honor recipient Col.Van T. Barfoot.

**  'Just absurd':  Virginia teen  who passed out at party before racial slurs were drawn on him.  Virginia.  A 16-year-old black student was at a party with his white friends and passed out.  Well, that should be a lesson learned.  Don't drink underage and especially don't pass out.

**  Brooklyn's historic Fort Hamilton exercises  federally-mandated edict to banish  Confederate ties.  (General Lee Avenue renamed John E. Warren Avenue.  A well-deserved honor for him as he won a Medal of Honor recipient.)

Civil War II: Confederate Heritage Month in April, Contextual Signage, Renaming Bases

APRIL 12, 2022

**  Gov. Reeves declares April Confederate Heritage Month.  (Mississippi.  April is the traditional Confederate Heritage Month.)

**  Perquimans  board oks language for signs at monument.  (North Carolina)

The signs say the statue was erected to honor the Civil war dead and also will say that some on the county opposed secession and the Confederacy and that some of them were Blacks.  An acceptable context signage.)

**  Military base could be  renamed for Lawrence Joel.  His name could replace a Confederate soldier's.  (Lawrence Joel from Winston-Salem, N.C. and recipient of the Medal of Honor.  A deserving candidate.  Just don't name all the bases after Blacks.)

**  Columbia will soon be home to the remains of  Nathan Bedford Forrest.  Community leaders share concerns.  He was moved from Memphis as a safety measure and because Blacks were offended.  Now he will be moved to private property and the Blacks in Columbia, Tennessee, are not happy.  Is there any way you can make a black person happy?)

**  Idaho's Medal of Honor Recipient Vernon Baker worthy of a military base named after him.  (Agreed, but do all the bases have to be renamed for black people?  Come on, there must be at least one worthy white person out there.  Let's quit being racist in the renaming.)

About That Proposed USCT Monument in Richmond, Virginia

In the last post, I mentioned that the Richmond City Council, which has been doing everything it can do to have the Confederate statues on Monument Avenue removed, is thinking about putting a new statue up there to honor black soldiers from the USCT (United States Colored Troops).

Again, I always support anything that relates to history.  However, I stand completely opposed to this current effort to remove all Confederate statues, memorials and plaques from all public spaces (and even private).  I am hoping that this current movement by Virginia Democrats to push this agenda does not mean I will have to vote for Republicans in the next election.  I would rather pick and choose my candidates as usual.

Anyway, I got to wondering about the USCT regiment that the Richmond City Council wants to be placed on Monument Avenue, especially in regards to the 14 Medals of Honor they received so did some research.

Richmond City Council Looks At Putting Up USCT Statue on Monument Avenue

Here's a story that really puts a burn on things.  With all its efforts to remove any and all things Confederate from the city that was the capital of the Confederacy for most of its existence, here is the latest thing they want to do.

A panel has advanced a resolution  for a new statue on the city's famed Monument Avenue that would honor black soldiers who fought during the Civil War.  It would memorialize a United States Colored Troops (USCT) regiment which had 14 members awarded the Medal of Honor.  They did not say what USCT regiment.  Too bad, as I would be definitely interested in that information.

The city council might take action on it as early as next week.

The commission also recommended removing the statue of Jefferson Davis from Monuments Avenue.

Now, I wouldn't mind a statue honoring the USCT on the avenue, but let's leave the Confederate ones.  How about a compromise?

Leave the Confederate statues (and add context plaques if needed) and put up this monument as long as it doesn't involve public funds.

**  Confederate statue remains in Chatham County.  (Pittsboro, N.C.)

**  As NC reckons with Confederate monuments, marker in Georgia supplies historical context.  As in they were fighting for slavery.  I am very willing to have these context markers put up as long as the statues remain.

**  Why the Emmett Till memorial briefly sat in front of the Confederate monument.  The Emmett Till marker has been repeatedly vandalized, most often with bullets because of its way out in the country location.  This is nothing short of a hate crime and if the offenders are apprehended, they should be charged as such.

I consider desecration to Confederate statues a hate crime as well.  Offenders should be treated as such.
