It failed to pass the Senate last year, but now backers are hoping for a different outcome now that they have a Democrat for president and Democrats control the Senate. There will be absolutely no problem with it passing there because, well, we know how Democrats stand on all things Confederate. What a change however. At one time it was the Democrats who supported all things Confederate, but definitely not any more.
The vote comes against a backdrop of larger reckoning in the U.S. with racism, one that has prompted a reassessment of statues and other symbols that valorize white supremacy.
Protesters decrying racism last year targeted Confederate monuments in multiple cities, lading to many being taken down. But many others remain in places of honor, including at the U.S. Capitol.
And, for those of you reading this blog, they are still coming down, but at least they are not being damaged and destroyed as much as they were.
